The College of New Jersey, founded in 1855 as the New Jersey State Normal School, is primarily an undergraduate and residential college with targeted graduate programs. TCNJ’s exceptional students, teacher-scholars, staff, alumni, and board members constitute a diverse community of learners dedicated to free inquiry and open exchange, to excellence in teaching, creativity, scholarship, and citizenship, and to the transformative power of education in a highly competitive institution. The College prepares students to excel in their chosen fields.

TCNJ has been recognized nationally for its excellence in Money magazine, U.S. News and World Report, The Fiske Guide to Colleges, Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges, and Peterson’s Competitive Colleges.

The modern languages curriculum at TCNJ is designed to increase a student’s proficiency in another language by developing four skill areas: aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. The knowledge of another language and culture is a cornerstone of a liberal arts education and a key to interacting in a complex, multicultural world. TCNJ students study abroad, participate in global student teaching, pursue international internships, and go on exchange study.

The department offers beginning and intermediate language instruction in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Classes are conducted in the target languages, and a language laboratory supplements classroom instruction. Advanced courses in linguistics, literature, history, and culture are offered. TCNJ’s core language teaching philosophies blend seamlessly with those of KCP.
